I will also Tweet concert listings and special events in the Portland, Oregon area, so you may want to follow just for that reason. Who knows, this could actually be a useful tool for catching a show at the last minute. Follow the Stink:

July 31st, 2009The Major 4 tell a fellow music lover to “suck it” with a $700,000 fine
July 31st, 2009The trial has ended for Joel Tenenbaum with the court ruling in favor of the four major record labels who were suing Joel. This Boston University student loves music like most people our age, using Napster and eventually KaZaa to download music for free. The case focused on 30 songs that Joel had downloaded, with the jury ordering Joel to pay $22,500 for each track – a total fine of $700,000.
Regardless of whether downloading copyrighted music for free is good or bad, legal or illegal, infringement or legit, the more important question is: does suing the hell out of a music fan accomplish anything good? Is this suppose to be some kind of warning to other potential file-sharers out there? All I’m getting from the record companies is “we make money, not art, screw you.” I know they are struggling financially, and file-sharing hurts them, but holy hell, they are digging their own grave by the second. An industry this stupid doesn’t deserve your money.

My Bloody Valentine Loveless album
July 31st, 2009My Bloody Valentine is one of the most perfect and important albums of the 90′s, right up there with Nirvana’s Nevermind and Neutral Milk Hotel’s In The Aeroplane Over the Sea. But who cares how “important” Loveless is, the album is just straight up great shoegaze listening.
On a side note, apparently the name “shoegaze” was used to describe this 90′s genre because when performed, band members fidgeted with their effect pedals the whole time, appearing to be gazing at their shoes.

The Flaming Lips’ Zaireeka, a bizarre 4-CD experiment
July 31st, 2009From the depths of CD hell today I am resurrecting The Flaming Lips’ 1997 album Zaireeka to look back at one of the most interesting and bizarre experiments in recorded music history. The story goes like this: The Flaming Lips wanted to make something for their hardcore fans and fellow artists to play with. The project was called Zaireeka. The album contained 4 compact discs, all of which were intended to be played at exactly the same time, theoretically creating a symphony of sound in your living room.
There were obvious problems with this experiment, though. For starters, you needed to have 4 CD players in proximity of each other. But you also needed to have friends… friends who were willing to put up with your Flaming Lips obsession and hang out for an afternoon of synchronized button pushing. Pitchfork’s music critic Jason Josephes hated the concept so much that he gave the album a “0.0″ rating in a review.
I wonder how an experiment like The Lips’ Zaireeka would work today? Synchronizing four MP3 files in four Windows Media Player windows kind of defeats the purpose. Everyone brings their laptop to the party and plays a different MP3, maybe? But really, if people didn’t have the patience for Zaireeka in ’97, I would anticipate a highly cynical reaction to a Zaireeka-like experiment in ’09.
I have never had the pleasure of partaking in a Zaireeka listening party, probably because I was only 8 when it was released. However, a quick e-Bay search tells me that it’s pretty easy to come by a brand new 4-disc copy of Zaireeka at a fair price. Friends willing to humor me will be hard to find, though.
Wikipedia has a pretty good sample and mashup set for Zaireeka if you’re interested in listening.

Dead Mellotron’s Ghost Light Constellation
July 30th, 2009Dead Mellotron is a one-man lo-fi reverb’d pop band from Louisiana created by a dude simply known as “Frazier.” Dead Mellotron is shoegazy, My Bloody Valentine-inspired, pop, a personal and creative deviation from his main band, Jealous Wives. Maybe you’ve heard of Dead Mellotron already? Apparently he thought it would be a good idea to friend every god damn person on MySpace. I can’t say that was a bad tactic, though… it got me listening. I’ve read several people describe Dead Mello. as a good lullaby before bed, and there is certainly something soothing about the melodies, but I think that his music is more ‘wake up on a Saturday at 6AM to watch the sunrise naked’ kind of music.
Dead Mellotron will be playing several shows in Texas next month, so you should go check that out if you’re in the area.

Vans Warped Tour coming through Portland
July 29th, 2009The Vans Warped Tour will be stopping right outside of Portland, Ore., in Hillsboro on August 16th, 2009. The event is being held at the Washington County Fairplex (the fairgrounds). As of tonight, tickets are still available for $30.50. While I’m not particularly fond of all of the bands playing, the all-day show should still be a fucking party in the sun. Some highlights include Anti-Flag, Bad Religion, Flogging Molly, LIGHTS, NOFX, Saosin, Senses Fail, Thrice, and Underoath. Check out the full set here. Get your tickets here.
